What was side-out scoring?
Before rally-point scoring was adopted internationally in 1999, only the serving team could score. Winning a rally on the opponent’s serve only won back the serve (a "side-out"). Sets went to 15.
Matches could last very long, so rally scoring was introduced to make them shorter and more predictable.
